This rare and unusual jewelry casket sourced from Paris is a small architectural marvel: pierced filigree panels in a lattice pattern reveal glimpses of the burgundy velvet lining beneath, framed by beveled glass on the lid and raised on four ornate cabriole feet with acanthus-leaf detailing. Lift the lid and the interior is still dressed in its original deep-plum velvet, softened with age.
This is a jewelry casket built to be looked at as much as used, equally at home holding rings and brooches or simply standing on a vanity as a small sculptural object. Wear consistent with its 19th-century origins: gentle tarnish to the gilt finish, soft fraying to the velvet lining, adding to its lived-in, romantic character.
I have never come across a casket like this and I’m not sure I ever will!
